Josie’s journey in public health began during her medical studies, where she developed a strong interest in health inequities and the social determinants of health. This led her to pursue an MSc in Global Health, where she deepened her understanding of healthcare systems in resource-limited settings and evidence-based approaches to strengthen them.

Drawing on this education, Josie applied her knowledge through work with Health Poverty Action in Southeast Asia. Across diverse cultural contexts, she designed and managed programmes addressing gaps in healthcare delivery and collaborated with communities, health providers, and government officials to improve access to quality care. She also coordinated the NIHR-funded GEMMS research programme in Cambodia, positioning her at the intersection of research and implementation. Through this work, Josie engaged with pressing questions around migration, mental health, and gendered violence, and explored how multidisciplinary mental health interventions could be considered within health systems.

Josie is motivated by translating research into actionable knowledge to strengthen health systems and policy. Her core interest lies in psychological well-being as a key dimension of human health and in understanding how it intersects with physical, social, and environmental factors. Building on this foundation, she is now pursuing doctoral research as part of the HealthIntelAct programme. Her PhD focuses on the mental health, well-being, and safety of nurses, and the impact this has on the quality of care. By generating actionable evidence on the needs of the health workforce, her research contributes to creating more sustainable and equitable healthcare systems.
