WP3 – Prosperity: Ensuring Financial and Social Sustainability of Health and Care Systems

Health and care systems face increasing financial challenges due to rising healthcare costs, workforce shortages, and growing demand for services. At the same time, smarter use of resources, improved efficiency, and better planning can help healthcare systems remain financially and socially sustainable—not only ensuring affordable, high-quality care for all but also creating better working conditions for healthcare professionals.

WP3 – Prosperity focuses on strengthening the financial and workforce sustainability of health and care systems. This means ensuring that resources are allocated effectively, waste is minimized, and decision-makers have the tools to invest in both cost-efficient care and a resilient, well-supported workforce. The research also explores how health system performance intelligence can help optimize funding, service delivery, and long-term workforce planning.

Key Research Areas

  • Smart healthcare financing – Identifying policies and strategies that ensure high-quality care remains accessible, affordable, and efficient.
  • Workforce well-being and sustainability – Exploring ways to support healthcare workers, improve working conditions, and address staffing challenges to ensure long-term workforce retention and resilience.
  • Reducing inefficiencies – Identifying areas of waste in healthcare spending and redirecting resources toward high-impact interventions, such as early detection and quality improvement, to prevent costly adverse events and improve long-term health outcomes.
  • Using data for better decisions – Developing tools and frameworks that help policymakers, healthcare managers, and insurers make informed choices about spending, service delivery, and workforce support.

By ensuring financial and social sustainability, WP3 helps health and care systems adapt to economic and workforce challenges while maintaining high-quality, equitable, and sustainable healthcare.
